Our SAT coach tools allow you to see your students' recommended “lesson plans” (aka personalized practice plan), as well as how students have been doing at the class level and at individual levels, making it easier than ever for you to support students in preparing for the SAT.

Creating a SAT Class
At the moment, SAT Coach Tools are only available for students who are enrolled in one of your classes. There are three ways you can create a class to enable the use of SAT Coach Tools:
- Create a new regular subject class (math, English, science, etc.) and add on the SAT coach resources
- Create a new class specifically for SAT
- Add SAT coach resources to an existing class
Enabling SAT Coach Tools
If you are creating a new class, select the SAT course from the Test prep category when choosing courses for your class.
Note: You will be encouraged to do this automatically if you select high school math courses.
To enable SAT Coach Tools for an existing class, start by selecting the class from your Teacher Dashboard. From the class page, select the Settings tab; once there, check the box under SAT test preparation, Turn on SAT test preparation reporting.
This action will add the SAT tab to your class page.
Student Data Sharing
Coaches can only see reports for students who have enabled SAT access to their coaches (a sub-setting from usual coach reports). Once you’ve created your class and enabled the SAT tools, all of the students in that class will automatically get an invitation to share their SAT activity with you.
The first time they log in to Official SAT Practice after you’ve enabled the SAT coach tools and added students, they will see a pop-up on their SAT Dashboard. Once they agree to share, you will start seeing their information in your class.
Note: If you add additional students to a class with SAT tools enabled, we will automatically send them an invitation to share their SAT data with you.
SAT Coach Tool Features
The SAT tab provides a high-level view of your class's progress in their SAT practice, including all students who have shared their SAT practice activity with you, students who have not shared their SAT practice activity with you, the top skills your class needs help with, as well as the specific math, reading, and writing lessons and skill levels for your class.
Top Skills
The Top skills your class needs help with section shows the top reading and writing skills along with the top math skills your class may need instruction on, based on an aggregated rank ordering of students’ skill levels. If you have limited time for SAT instruction each week, you can use this section to decide at a glance what skill is best to spend time covering across your class.
SAT Practice Activity Report
In this report, you can see:
- Time practiced. Total time spent answering, reviewing questions, or consuming instructional content on Official SAT Practice (in hours and minutes). Specifically, this includes time students spend doing practice problems or taking full exams, watching videos or reading articles related to SAT practice, and time spent engaging with the dashboard. Currently, this does not include time students spend on essay practice. This metric is updated every hour.
- # of Practiced Questions. Questions completed across skill practice, full exams, and timed mini-sections. Use this column to get a view of how many questions a student did in a particular time range.
- % Recommended Math Questions. This metric is the number of recommended math questions done divided by the total number of math questions done. Recommended questions are from skills that the system recommends to a student based on their strengths and weaknesses.
- % Recommended Reading & Writing Questions. This metric is the number of recommended reading and writing questions done divided by the total number of reading and writing questions done. Recommended questions are from skills that the system recommends to a student based on their strengths and weaknesses.
- College Board Status. Indicates whether the student has linked their College Board account with their Khan Academy account.
You can filter this report by subject by clicking on the SAT Subject Dropdown in the upper left of the report and choosing All Subjects, Math, or Reading & Writing:
You can change the report's time range; there are preset time ranges for Today, Yesterday, Last 7 Days, and Last 30 Days, but you can also choose a Custom Range.
If a student has started or completed a diagnostic test or imported past SAT results, Official SAT Practice will provide recommended questions based on each student's strengths and weaknesses in those assessments.
We encourage students to work on recommended questions to target the concepts they most need to work on, and you'll see their progress on their personalized skill recommendations in the form of a percentage. You can quickly scan these percentages to discover which students might need a reminder to follow recommendations.
Clicking on a student's skill practice percentage will open a pop-up detailing their Current recommended skills, and whether the student has completed each skill. Note that current recommended skills are for the current moment in time, and may not apply across the entire selected time range.
If you'd like to see all of their recommended skills, click on See all skills to be taken to their Student SAT overview page (see The Student SAT Tab section in this guide for more information on this page).
Lastly, you can download SAT practice activity report data by clicking on the Download CSV link in the upper right of the report:
Resending the SAT Data Sharing Request
Below the SAT practice activity report, you'll find all the students enrolled in your class who haven't shared their SAT practice activity with you yet. To resend the share request to those students, click on the Resend SAT data sharing request link in the upper right corner of the section:
After you click it, the link will change to a confirmation that the request was sent:
You can hide this section any time by clicking on the Hide link next to the section header.
Math and Reading & Writing Lessons
These sections provide teachers with an aggregated view of the most relevant SAT skills to work on with students. There are 42 skills for math and 28 skills for Reading and Writing. They are rank ordered based on students’ skill levels on these topics and the frequency at which the topics appear on the exam.
You can see the number of students in your class at each level across skills.
In both the Math and Reading & Writing Lesson sections you can search for specific skills to work on with your class.
Also in both Math and Reading & Writing Lesson sections, you can select View details and browse lessons next to any skill:
After clicking, a pop-up window will appear that details:
- Lesson plans by teachers, for teachers. These are relevant lessons with guidance on how to teach that skill in a classroom setting. These lessons were created by a group of teachers in collaboration with the College Board.
- Official SAT Practice worked examples. Videos that walk a student through an SAT question in that skill. You can assign these videos directly to your students.
- Related content: Other exercises, videos, or articles outside of Official SAT Practice from Khan Academy’s broad library of materials that you can assign directly to your students.
- Top recommended practice for. A list of students for whom this skill is among the specific short list of practice Official SAT Practice is currently recommending to them.
- Student skill levels. A deeper dive into the student skill levels. Click on a student’s name to dive deeper into their activity.
Finally, in the Math Lessons section you can filter by state standard. To do this, click on the State dropdown menu above the table and select a state:
The Student SAT Tab
You can get to any student's SAT Tab by clicking on their name in the SAT practice activity report, and you can switch to another student's SAT Tab by clicking on the dropdown in the upper left corner of the page and choosing their name:
The Student SAT Tab is the best place to review a student's individualized SAT practice progress; you can find their top recommended practice activities, their recent activity and completed practice, their practice test scores, their overall skill levels in Math, Reading, and Writing, their practice calendar (if they've created one), any upcoming test dates, and whether they've connected their College Board account.
Top Recommended Practice
These are the current recommended practice activities for your student. Currently, coaches cannot assign SAT skill practice but can assign SAT videos and articles. Learn more.
Each time a student completes a timed mini- section (it’s always the final activity), Official SAT Practice will generate a new list of practice recommendations.
Completed Practice
The Completed Practice section shows you the exact questions in diagnostic tests, skill practice, or practice tests that your student completed, and can be filtered by SAT subject (Math, Reading & Writing, Essay, or All).
To review a student's specific practice answers, click on any row and you'll be taken to that activity:
Practice Test Scores
This section will list any practice test scores for your student. This section will be empty if they haven't taken any practice exams.
We want to note that these scores aren't meant to be used for grading, as each student has different goals and is in the process of practicing. Additionally, students can search for the answers to these practice exams online.
Recent Activity, Practice Plan, Test Date, Overall Levels, and College Board
The Recent Activity widget allows you to quickly review an individual student's practice activity (practice time and practiced questions) by subject and time range.
The Practice plan widget shows you the student's self-created practice schedule. If the student set a practice schedule, you'll see:
- White stars. Represents a practice day during which there was no student activity. Hovering over these stars will show you the student's practice time and question number goals for that day.
- Blue stars. Represents a practice day during which the student was active. Hovering over these stars will show you the student's practice time and question number goals for that day, how many questions the student answered, and how long they practiced.
- White trophy. Represents a scheduled practice test. Hovering over this goal will show you how many questions the student answered and how long they practiced.
- Blue trophy. Represents a scheduled SAT test day. This is often the last date on a practice schedule.
The Test Date widget quickly tells you the student's SAT test date, and how many days away it is.
The Overall Levels widget is a quick way to see the student's overall skill level in the Math and Reading & Writing subjects.
Lastly, the CollegeBoard.org widget will tell you if the student's College Board account is linked with the Khan Academy account.
Email notifications
Teachers with SAT enabled on their classes will receive a weekly notification about their students’ progress. These emails will include information about practice tests students just completed or have upcoming that week, plus a summary of students’ activity for the past week.
Helpful tips to implement Official SAT Practice in your school
- Explore the student resources to familiarize yourself with what students will see by selecting the SAT subject under Test Prep in the Subjects drop-down at the upper left of the Khan Academy screen.
- Collaborate with other teachers to share strategies and troubleshoot issues together. To share and see tips and best practices from other teachers, check out our teacher community.
- Develop a school action plan with measurable goals for the year, and continue to track those goals.
- Engage students’ families, volunteers, or community groups to emphasize practice.
- Try the free SAT teacher tools e-learning course. It’s an hour-long, interactive training experience that walks you through ways you can integrate SAT practice into your curriculum. You can complete the training at your own pace.
