Why do I need to donate in order to use Khanmigo?

Khan Academy uses technology from OpenAI in order to run Khanmigo. Each interaction with Khanmigo is a cost that we need to pay OpenAI for. 

Additionally, the technology powering Khanmigo is brand new, and supporting it requires a substantial amount of internal resources to build, test, and ensure that it’s safe for all ages to use. 

Both of these factors make Khanmigo cost significantly more to run than other Khan Academy features. Because of this, we’re asking for a monthly donation to help offset that cost. Your contribution will also be helping Khan Academy develop a tool with the potential to transform education for millions of learners. 

We understand if this makes early access to Khanmigo prohibitive for some people at this time. Rest assured that bringing down this cost and making Khanmigo more accessible to a broader audience is something that everyone on the team wants to happen.
