What translation tools do advocates and translators use?

This article will help you understand our translation tools, and will help train your translation team. 

Khan Academy language advocates use these translation tools:

• The Khan Academy Translation Portal (the main translation dashboard)
• Crowdin.com (to accept new translators onto the team and approve written/text translations)
• YouTube.com (to host translated videos)
• Amara.org (to create translated subtitles for videos on the English site)

Khan Academy Translation Portal: Translation teams use the Translation Portal to access and translate videos, exercises/articles, and website/mobile app text. The Portal contains everything that the translator needs to work on, except  subtitles, and is easy to navigate. Translators on your team should always work directly in the Translation Portal. Language Advocates, however, will need to learn about Crowdin, Youtube, Amara, and how they integrate with our Translation Portal.

Crowdin: Crowdin is an external website that Khan Academy language advocates use to help manage part of the translation process. Specifically:

1. Translators must create a Crowdin account in order to join your team (the advocate accepts or declines these any translators who apply);
2. You, as a language advocate, may use Crowdin to approve the written translations of your translators.  

Amara: Amara is an external website that Khan Academy language advocates use to manage and translate subtitles. Specifically:

1. You will have translators create an Amara account, to be sent an invitation to join your team.
2. You, as language advocate, will use Amara to assign and publish the subtitle translations of your translators.

YouTube: The advocate will go directly to the youtube language channel that we provide in order to upload and publish translated videos. We recommend that you create a private playlist for translators to upload their files. The approved translated videos must  be mapped (linked) to the original English video (instructions here).
